Contemporary Landscape from the Digital Age

Artists: Zena Blackwell, Caitlin Flood- Molyneux, Christopher Holloway, Maggie James, James Moore, Jon Pouteney, Jason Rouse, Eleanor Whiteman

‘The 8 artists represented in this exhibition offer a fresh perspective on a traditional genre, where painting landscape belongs as much to the virtual, invisible or imaginary plane, as to describing the topography of what is before one eyes. From the interface between real and remembered, dreamt and experienced; for these painters landscape as painted as opposed to being photographed, offers an ‘elsewhere’ - a setting beyond ordinary ground.

Attempts to articulate the fragile nature of phenomenon and the apprehension of shifting realities has been the domain of philosophers. The ability to look at these versions of worlds via painting, is perhaps to reveal as much about the looker as of the looked at.’

'Paper Exchange' presents the challenge: what happens if we exchange our normal working materials? In the messy business of making an artwork, materials and their qualities are central to an artist's whole practice. Whichever culture we grow up in we become carriers of long traditions which we explore and challenge. The questions raised about finding common ground between artists coming from long but differing traditions in a global, geographically shrinking world, and the potential for misunderstandings as well as mutual enrichment, has, I think, extended the dialogue which we hope is an essential part of Paper Exchange in the Open Books project.’ Zhu Chunhang
