The oil paintings refer to delicate ecosystems thriving along pathways observed on bike rides through the city of Cardiff.
In 2020/21 I was part of an online group setting up an exhibition in Malaysia, we were successful in a funding application for 8 artists from Wales and 8 from Asia/China to create online works and an exhibition.
The artist I worked with was Eu Jin Lim, a young architect in Malaysia. We decided to make drawings of a journey across our respective cities. We were both in lockdown - it was all a bit weird.
I made a folding book and 10 large drawings 100 x 150cm, marking 10 points on my journey. I had found a new way to get to my studio - initially the 4 lane road I had to cross was deserted apart from the occasional ghost bus - but the river trail was alive with walkers and joggers. When we were able to go out and about we took sound clips, everything seemed to have eerie distortions.
The paintings are a continuation of this series. Colours are more muted than my previous work. I became very interested in mixing different greys, especially mixing, muting and tinting strong colour mixes. It was after the pandemic. Everything felt different.
